 What is Assistive Technology?

Assistive technology (AT) is products, equipment, and systems that enhance learning, working and daily living for persons with disabilities. There are many different kinds of assistive technology that we can spot everywhere. There can be low tech, high tech, hardware, computer hardware, apps on our IPhones, customized for a specific person, and so much more.

There are many ways to find assistive technologies that work for different children and people. To find it there are also many resources online that talk about them and where you could possibly find some.

Here are some websites that can be great resources :

Here is also a great TEDx video that is a great resource in a firsthand experience of someone who has a visual disability, and he talks about the resources that he has around him to help navigate through life with his disability.

Some App Examples that we can find right on our IPhone :

1) Matrix Game

The Matrix game is an app that is focused on children’s visual and perception skills. It features multiple mini games for the child to use. It can help them improve categorization, spatial orientation, classification skills, and more.

2) Smart Shapes :

This app is a bit more simple than the other apps on this list, although it is designed to help kids build their motor skills. It also helps kids to learn their shapes and their relative sizes. It is essentially one game vs other apps that provide a multitude of different games, and their job is to match the shapes.

3)  Otsimo Special Education

Otsimo is an app for kids with learning disabilities, ADHD, Autism, Down syndrome, etc. This app is focused more on helping kids build motor skills. It is a highly interactive app, based on a specific curriculum which is created based on certain questions asked about the child (ex. If they are verbal or nonverbal, etc.).

4)  Breathe, Think, Do with Sesame :

This app is designed to help kids with behavioral and emotional issues. It uses a Sesame Street like format with interactive games and audio. These games and audio have kids walk through tasks that may frustrate them, and work through those emotions to find a solution.

5) Model Me Going Places :

This app was designed for kids with Aspergers syndrome or Autism. It allows kids to pick where they want to go such as the playground, doctors, mall, etc, and visualize what it may be like to go there. It includes audio and visuals for the user, and may help prepare a child for when it is actually time to go to these places.
